SIMANI - Favourites
Favourites

The Newfoundland musical duet, SIMANI, have been a cornerstone in traditional Newfoundland music. Formed in 1977 by Bud Davidge and Sim Savory, their music helped keep our unique heritage alive by putting old stories to song and recording local jigs and reels, many that have never before been recorded. There is no doubt that SIMANI are a household name in Newfoundland and Labrador and surely there is a recording or two of SIMANI in virtually every house in the province, as well as in many expatriate Newfoundlander’s homes around the world.

It is rumored the name SIMANI was derived from someone asking Bud, who was playing that night at the local Lions Club? Bud replied, "Sim and I". By the time the music began that night, the name was already set.

Nearly all of SIMANI's recorded songs are originals, written by Bud Davidge who was also the vocalist for the group. Sim Savory is a gifted musician, being a master of many instruments, as well as a very talented sound engineer. That variety of talent worked very well for SIMANI and it showed in the quality of their recordings.

In a musical career that lasted from 1977 to 1997, SIMANI were stars with major radio airplay and sold out shows wherever they performed. Since their first recording “Saltwater Cowboys” in 1981, they have produced 12 recordings. To their credit SIMANI defined a sound that became predominant in many recording that were done in Newfoundland and Labrador in the 1980's. Their first few albums were recorded at Clode Sound in Stephenville and the remainder recorded at Sim's studio in Belleoram.

SIMANI have given up touring but are still working toward the advancement of traditional Newfoundland music with Bud and Sim releasing individual recording projects over the past few years.

In 2002 SIMANI (Bud & Sim) were recognized for their long term contributions to the East Coast Music Industry by being presented with the Stompin' Tom Award at the East Coast Music Awards. SIMANI have many signature songs and on this SIMANI compilation, we are presenting the most popular songs that capture.........The Magic That Is “SIMANI”

Silly Songs
Silly Songs

It seems in Newfoundland we can make up a funny or silly song about anything. Poking fun at ourselves goes hand in hand with everyday experiences.

It makes no difference whether the song is about a sheep “Aunt Martha’s Sheep” and the fate that befell her. Wacky baccy “Eli’s On The Weed” what happens when you really need a smoke. A cabin “Up At The Cabin” aah.. the joy of having a few friends at the cabin. “Peter Street” the story of a careless night on the town. Everyone’s favorite “Cock A Doodle Do” nothing to do with you! “Never Been There Before” people and places you go that you find you like and then you keep going back. The outhouse “Good Old Newfie Outhouse” cold nights and the joy of outdoor plumbing. A goat “Paddy Mcginty’s Goat” and The Mobile Goat” ooh.. the havoc they can bring. “Rubber Boots” and why you should be careful. Darts and darts gone awry “Ladies Dart League Fight” A blackbird “Where Be The Blackbird To? A tongue in cheek romp in the hay “Twice Daily”.. Always better than once.

It’s all here, real or implied! What’s life without humor? Boring!

Selections Include: Rubber Boots • Mark Hiscock, Ladies Dart League Fight • Peter Francis Quinlan, Aunt Martha’s Sheep • Dick Nolan, Peter Street • Patrick Moran, Mark Hiscock, Mike Kinsella & Larry Foley, Eli’s On The Weed • Ellis Coles, Cock A Doodle Do • Ray Lake, Never Been There Before • The Punters, Mobile Goat • Colleen Power, Good Old Newfie Outhouse • Bobby Evans, Up At The Cabin • Wince Coles, Paddy McGinty’s Goat • The Ennis Sisters, Twice Daily • Shanneyganock, Where Be The Blackbird To? • Muldow

Women Of Song
Women Of Song

The character of Newfoundland Labrador women was defined a long time ago by the women who took their place alongside the men in doing all kinds of hard work to keep and maintain a family life.

Many times and for long periods of time the men went away to work and provide for their families and the women stayed at home and took on the full responsibility for their homes and families.

Our women were very important in preserving the songs of their homeland and the newfound songs they learned in their new land.

The women singers in Newfoundland Labrador are a very talented group that can compare with the best anywhere in the world and we are pleased to be able to present and showcase some of them for you in this first in a series of CD’s titled “Newfoundland Labrador Women Of Song”.

Selections Include: Raglan Road • Jackie Sullivan, No Price Tags On The Doors In Newfoundland • Colleen Power, Northern Lights Of Labrador • Rasa, Once I Loved • Allison Walsh, A Woman's Heart • Jennifer Trainor, Gypsy Rover • The Palmer Girls, Tiny Red Light • Janet Cull, She's Like The Swallow • Jenny Gear, The Lowlands • Teresa Ennis, Candlelight & Wine • Denielle Hann, Saltwater Charlie • Joy Norman, Red Is The Rose • The Ennis Sisters, Out From St. Leonard's • Hilary Moores & Nichole Kirkland
