Roger grew up in St. Lawrence next door to his own soccer pitch �The Hog�. He was greatly influenced, of course, by his Dad who happens to be a member of three soccer Halls of Fame in Newfoundland. His brothers, Gary and Rudy, showed him no mercy and if he was ever going to make it with the senior team he would have to try and wrestle the ball from them. No easy task, since both were blessed with exceptional skills and techniques.

Roger progressed from the meadow to the Mosquito division of St. Lawrence Minor Soccer where was coached by Len Slaney and successfully won the Provincial championship in Botwood. Roger was very dedicated to learning the specific skills with the ball and thus in 1974 entered the Skills competition sponsored by Adidas and the Newfoundland Soccer Association. Coming up against very strong competitors from St. John's, Roger stole the show and earned the right to represent this province at the very 1st National competition. Roger played a number of Provincial championships with St. Lawrence Minor teams and in 1976 was a member of the Newfoundland Under-16 team that competed in Toronto. Roger later became a minor soccer coach and passed on all that he had learned to the young boys and girls of St. Lawrence.

This player was the happiest person who ever played for the St. Lawrence Laurentians. He was always in a great mood and that emulated to the dressing room and the field. When Frank Pitman, Rudy Slaney, Frank Haskell, Tom Tarrant and the late Bobby Edwards relocated in 1979/80 Roger was one of the new young and budding stars to try and fill their place. He did a great job and played continuously with the 1st Division Laurentians until 1985 when work commitments took him away. During those years Roger was a member of the St. Lawrence Laurentians that captured five (5) Burin Peninsula Championships; three (3) All-Nfld Titles; one (1) Atlantic Provinces title; two (2) Premier's Cups; and represented the province of Newfoundland at the National Challenge Cup on two (2) occasions. In 1989 Roger returned to St. Lawrence and played Intermediate soccer with the Laurentians until 1992 when he received a severe leg injury which ended his career. Roger served on the St. Lawrence Soccer Association for several years in the early 1990's before again moving on to advance his lifework and ensuring a better life for his family.

Roger joins his Father, Herb, his brother, Rudy, his grandfather, Rennie, and his uncles, Loyola, Fabian, Adrian, Roy, and Ray into the St. Lawrence Soccer Hall of Fame and what makes this induction very special is the fact that his sister, Lisa will be joining him and the other member of the Slaney's into the Hall.
