After playing meadow soccer in St. Lawrence, Ren moved on to play for the St. Augustine's High School house teams and the varsity team against Brother Rice for the Gus Etchegary Trophy. Ren's career could have been a long one had it not been for a terrible tragedy that took his father's life. This forced him to focus his life on helping his mom, brothers, and sisters.

Ren left for work in Toronto and when he returned in 1970 his desire to perform at the top level waned and he started playing 3rd Division for the fun of it. In the late 1970's Ren joined the St. Lawrence Soccer Association and was overwhelmed in 1982 to be asked to coach the Senior Laurentians. How could you not want to coach players like Joe Turpin, Al Slaney, Keith Farrell, Greg Quirke, Junior Edwards, and Wils Molloy.

Ren coached the team to the Premier's Cup by defeating Holy Cross 2-1. They won the semi-final of the Challenge Cup by defeating Holy Cross in two games winning by scores of 1-0 and 5-0. They then went on to Corner Brook defeating them by scores of 3-0 and 5-0 in the Challenge Cup final. They went on to Nova Scotia losing the Atlantics by a score of 2- 1.

Ren coached again in l983 winning the Burin Peninsula and defeating ASIA of St. Pierre by a score of 2-1 to win the Premier's Cup. They lost in the Challenge Cup final to Holy Cross, Ren continued working with the St. Lawrence Soccer Association for several more years at the executive level.

In the late 1980's and early 90's Ren played for and coached the St. Lawrence Masters winning numerous Provincial Championships. In 1991 and 1992 the Masters team, coached by Ren Edwards, won the Leo Murray Memorial Plaque as the Team of the Year in St. Lawrence.

In the past number of years Ren has been supporting his son\rquote s efforts as he strives to be one of the best players in Newfoundland as a member of the Canada Games team, Memorial Sea Hawks and St. Lawrence Laurentians.

Ren is a welcome addition to the St. Lawrence Hall of Fame.
