Noel Doyle

Mention the name Noel Doyle and most people in Newfoundland wouldn`t know who you were talking about, BUT just say OZZIE and everyone knows who you are talking about.

Growing up with brothers Howard & Glen and his cousins Gary, Paul, Norbert & Junior you had the makings of a great soccer team and all of them were very accomplished players. His Mother and Father always supported and encouraged him to be the best Soccer player that he could be and always play fair. It was fitting that in 1999 when St. Lawrence won the Fair Play Award at the Nationals in Chilliwack, Noel accepted on behalf of the team.

Like his brother Glen, Noel won the provincial soccer skills competition and represented Newfoundland at the National competition 1979 in Toronto where he placed 5th.

His minor soccer started at the age of 4 when he played with the Under 6 team and he progressed through minor and junior, playing on the 1985 Canada Games team. He won many Minor soccer awards including numerous MVP & Most Gentlemanly Player awards.

Noel started playing Challenge Cup soccer at an early age and played for 17 seasons from 1983 to 2000. As a member the St. Lawrence Laurentians he was awarded the Most Sportmanlike Player award in 1995 & MVP in 1997.

Noel was a winner as his record indicates with two 4A soccer titles in High School, many Peninsula titles at Minor and Senior level, two Provincial Under18 titles with St. Lawrence, two Provincial Under 18 titles with tB.P.S.A. teams, one Provincial Under 21 title with St. Lawrence, three Provincial Indoor Soccer titles, seven Provincial Challenge Cup titles, National Challenge Cup Bronze medal in 1999, one Masters Provincial title, Two Premier Cup Provincial titles and a 5th place finish at the Canada games in 1985.

His minor coaches were Jr. Edwards, Al Slaney, Greg Quirke, Clyde Miller. Some of his other coaches in juniors and seniors were Alex Slaney, Jackie Walsh, Jerome Slaney, Jim Stacey, Keith Farrell , Greg Quirke, Frank Pittman, Jr. Doyle, Gord Dunphy, Jack Simms, and Junior Edwards. Noel played with such great players as Al Slaney, Wils Molloy, Junior Edwards, Jim Loder, Junior Doyle and many many more.

Noel looked up to the whole first division team but there were two especially stood out to him, they were his two brothers Glen and Howard.

He enjoyed being involved in soccer in St. Lawrence so much because he had the chance to play with some great players which made him a better player. Along the way he made some lifelong friends which he will cherish forever. He loved playing in St. Lawrence because the players and the fans who came and watched the games were so passionate about the game of soccer .

Noel had a rocket of a shot when he connected with it and there are a few memorable goals, one especially Ozzie connected and the ball went like a rocket to the top corner of the net. No goalie was going to stop that shot, not without going in the net with the ball.

He lists among his most memorable moments, all the Challenge Cup titles and the National Challenge Cup Bronze medal 1999 in BC.

Noel shared this funny incident which helps show something about the soccer mentality in St. Lawrence. Noel calls it the quote of the century. We were playing Holy Cross in the championship game one year and on one play I separated my thumb so I ran to the bench to tell the coach Jr. Edwards, he looks at me and says, “do you kick with it” well I guess I went back on the field.

Noel “OZZIE” Doyle is welcomed into the St. Lawrence Soccer Hall of Fame.
