Mike was born at St. Lawrence in 1940. He, like many young boys, couldn't wait for school to be out just to get a slog on the old football. His meadow development was certainly reflected in the organized game on an offical soccer pitch. In the meadows it was everyone for himself and Mike's rough and tough display indicated that he had learned his trade well.

Mike played at the high school level and at the Junior level, where he was a member of the Burin Peninsula Champs in 1959 and the All-Nfld Champs in 1960. Mike played at the right half-back position for part of his career and goalie for the rest.

Mike was also on a number of Senior teams that went on to win Burin Peninsula and Provincial titles. He was on Burin Peninsula Championship teams in 1959, 1960, 1961, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967, and 1968 He won Senior Provincial titles in 1966, 1967, and 1968. Mike was a member of the Senior Laurentians who won the Atlantic title in 1967 and went on to represent Newfoundland in the Eastern Canadian Championship in Toronto.

As his career was winding down, Mike received one of the greatest accolades a player could receive. He was selected as a Provincial All-Star Team member in 1970, which turned out to be the first team from Newfoundland to defeat an Ontario team in Challenge Cup. In one season Mike had 13 shut-outs, a record during his playing days. Maybe it still stands today!!

Mike was one of those fearless goalies who are very seldom seen in the game of soccer. It was thought he would even stand in front of a cannon ball if he felt he could stop it. When the referee wasn't looking, Mike gave many an opponent a bat in the side of the head or a kick on the shins. He feared no one and all players showed respect for that attribute

Mike was inducted into the St. Lawrence Hall of Fame in 1990.
