Margaret Slaney

Marg was born in St. Lawrence and enjoyed watching soccer from an early age. Her father Bernard Murray and her uncle Leo always collected at the gate for soccer games at the old soccer field, but I’m sure they always paid her admission so she could go to Haley’s store for a custard cone.

Marg proudly followed in the footsteps of her father and for years collected at the gate for her beloved Laurentians. She has always been one of our very supportive fundraisers over the years serving on many fundraising committees.

She was always actively involved as a minor soccer parent for her children and as a grandmother now will continue to support her grandchildren. Her daughters Danielle & Laurie Daughter Danielle played minor soccer, ladies soccer, as well as high school soccer. Danielle has also coached the High School soccer team since becoming a teacher.

Marg grew up with soccer all around her like all Laurentians and to this day enjoys the sport immensely. Her late husband Ray, who is in the Hall of Fame, was a star soccer player for the Laurentians in the 60’s & 70’s. Her sons in law Patrick Edwards & Sean Slaney have both played for the Laurentians Challenge Cup Team.

As a member of “The Golden Girls” she has travelled all across Canada as a proud supporter of the Laurentians and their quest for the National Challenge Cup. She has spent many an evening washing uniforms and supporting the team in any way she could.

Her most memorable moments are any National Tournament watching the boys play. Her most memorable Nationals was in 2002 in St. John’s. And her favourite trip was to Chilliwack, BC. in 1999 when the boys won the bronze medal.

Marg is currently enjoying her retirement and spending time with her grandchildren on a daily basis as well as watching soccer as often as she can. Her other love is travelling whether it be on a cruise or to some part of Canada to watch her beloved Laurentians compete for the Challenge Cup.

Marg is entering the St. Lawrence Soccer Wall of Honour and taking her place alongside her father Bernard Murray, and her husband Ray Slaney who are in the Hall of Fame.

To the players on the teams they were always referred to as “The Golden Girls”. But whenever you wanted anything done at a Nationals or at any time there was NO doubt that you could call on them and they were always there. Whether it was washing uniforms for half the night so the players wouldn’t have to do it and would have fresh uniforms to play in or sewing crests on uniforms, or any number of other requests, you could always count on “The Golden Girls” to be there to support their players and their heroes.

They have attended countless Challenge Cup Nationals together and in fact it became part of their annual holiday to be together and be the true fans they are at every Challenge Cup National Tournament St. Lawrence plays in.

It is fitting that they be inducted to the Wall of Honour together as they are always inseparable.
