Madeline Kelly

Madeline was born in St. Lawrence and her interest in soccer started when she was a little girl watching her dad (Leo Murray) lineing the soccer field and also giving the players oranges between periods of the game. Her father also collected at the gate with her uncle Bernard. Visiting St. Pierre & Miquelon soccer players were welcomed and billeted at their home when they came to play the Laurentians.

In 1971 Madeline moved away from St. Lawrence, but on every summer holiday spent in St. Lawrence the highlight of that holiday was always the time she spent watching soccer games.

In 1993 when the Laurentians travelled to Etobicoke to play in the National Challenge Cup, she became the ultimate fan and has attended every Nationals since, together with Betty & Marg.

Like the other Golden Girls she did anything that was required to support the Laurentians. Anyone who has been at a Nationals surely remembers the fun the Golden Girls have and knows the tremendous supporters they are of St. Lawrence Laurentians

Madeline said “throughout all these years I have soccer memories that will last a lifetime”.

Her most memorable moments are any National Tournament watching the boys play. Her most memorable Nationals was in 2002 in St. John’s. And her favourite trip was to Chilliwack, BC. in 1999 when the boys won the bronze medal.

To the players on the teams they were always referred to as “The Golden Girls”. But whenever you wanted anything done at a Nationals or at any time there was NO doubt that you could call on them and they were always there. Whether it was washing uniforms for half the night so the players wouldn’t have to do it and would have fresh uniforms to play in or sewing crests on uniforms, or any number of other requests, you could always count on “The Golden Girls” to be there to support their players and their heroes.

They have attended countless Challenge Cup Nationals together and in fact it became part of their annual holiday to be together and be the true fans they are at every Challenge Cup National Tournament St. Lawrence plays in.

It is fitting that they be inducted to the Wall of Honour together as they are always inseparable.
