Len Slaney was born on August 20, 1946 at St Lawrence, Newfoundland. After learning to play soccer on the meadows, he progressed to the large field playing for St.Augustine's High School, the Junior Laurentians, the Senior Laurentians, and Memorial University of Newfoundland (a member of MUN's first varsity team in 1967 coached by Matt Foster). His playing days lasted from 1963 to 1967 achieving a High School Provincial title in 1964 and an All-Newfoundland title in 1966.

Len's greatest contribution to the game of soccer was in the are of the "Builder's" category. During his thirty-eight years of involvement, he has coached a total of sixteen All-Newfoundland championship teams. These were four Bantam titles; four Peewee titles, one Mosquito title, one Provincial All-Star title; and six High School titles. He also coached a Provincial All-Star team in 1967 to a tournament in Montreal, Quebec. In that tournament his team won three and lost one; a 2-1 defeat to Montreal.

During those thirty-eight years, Len has served on the St. Lawrence Soccer Association for twenty-eight years; the Burin Peninsula Soccer Association for twenty years; and the Newfoundland Soccer Association for fifteen years. He served in many different executive capacities at each of these levels. At the NLSA he served as Vice President, Southern Director, Challenge Cup Committee, Convenor of Tournaments, Master of Ceremonies for various events, Advisor for the Hall of Fame and drafter of the new Mega-Tournament. At the BPSA level he served as Vice President, Chairman of Senior Soccer, Chairman of Hall of Fame, Master of Ceremonies for Annual Awards and Hall of Fame induction. At the Laurentian level, he served as President, Vice President, Secretary, Hall of Fame Chairman, Irish Committee Chairman, Co-Chairman of the 1977 National Senior Men's Championship in St. Lawrence, Chairman of Fundraising Committee for Challenge Cup and Master of Ceremonies for all Soccer events in St. Lawrence. Len also served as spokesperson for the St Lawrence Laurentian at National Challenge Cup competition in Winnipeg, Kitchener-Waterloo, Calgary (twice), New Minas, Saint John, Frederickton, Chilliwack, and St. Lawrence. At Chilliwack, Len did the play- by-play of the Laurentian games over radio station CHCM.

Len was inducted into the St. Lawrence Soccer Hall of Fame in 1988 and the Burin Peninsula Soccer Hall of Fame in 1989. His commitment to the game culminated in 1999 with the presentation of the "Executive of the Year" Award from the Newfoundland Soccer Association.
