Joseph Tarrant

Growing up in St. Lawrence, Jose Tarrant was no different than any other boy, he played soccer in the meadows. Although not possessing the skill and talent of his Hall of Fame brothers, Patrick (Pats) and Harry, it didn't stop him from having a kick with the other boys in the early 20th century. Unlike most soccer players who give up kicking a soccer ball when they retired, Jose never gave up the art of kicking.

Since 1904, there have been many great soccer players who played with the St. Lawrence Laurentians but also since that time there have always been dedicated, devoted and staunch fans who not only followed the team around but had their own unique way of showing their support for their beloved Laurentians. Jose Tarrant was one of those unique characters. Jose was a kicker and when he stood on the sideline and the ball was passed to Herb Slaney or Bob Kelly or whoever, Jose would haul back and make a big kick as if the ball had been passed to him. Many a fan over the years got a boot in the shins from one of those famous kicks from Jose. Eventually most fans wouldn't dare stand next to Jose at a game for fear of not being able to walk away after the game. Jose would always stand on the Hospital road side of the field and during many games, the other fans were often seen watching Jose kicking at the imaginary ball instead of watching the game. Even the fans in Grand Bank became aware of his antics and they just loved seeing him at the Stoodley Memorial Pitch kicking that imaginary ball anytime a Laurentian player got the opportunity to score.

Jose Tarrant was an avid fan who faithfully followed his Laurentians around no matter where they played. After each home game he would drive around the Harbour looking to see if there was a group gathered to discuss and play the game all over again. He always knew a group would be gathered at the bottom of Slaney's Lane and Jose would stop and get into the discussion with all the other men. Even when he was talking about the game he was still kicking when he gave his version of Bill Dock, Reg Farrell or Norm Kelly taking a bullet shot on goal.

It's fans like Jose Tarrant who have been responsible for the success and longivity of the St. Lawrence Laurentians. Because of people like Jose, the foundation for fan support in St. Lawrence is as strong in 2009 as it was in the 1940's, 50's, 60's and 70's.We welcome Joseph Tarrant name to be honoured, like other great supporters of the St. Lawrence Laurentians, to the St. Lawrence Laurentians Wall of Honour.
