GERARD QUIRKE

When our next inductee started playing minor soccer, everyone in St. Lawrence knew we had another STAR in the making. He was a phenomenal player whose skill and technique with a soccer ball was unmatched.

His soccer career spanned a period of 20 years until his untimely death at the tender age of 28.

During his career he was instrumental in helping his beloved Laurentians win a number of Provincial titles. During that time he won many individual awards but was very modest about them because, to him, the team always came first.

He not only touched us with his soccer skills but did so even more with a kind, caring, and loving personality that not only won the hearts of his friends and family but also to the many opponents he faced on and off the field.

A tournament called the Gerard Quirke Memorial is now played in his memory. Fittingly, his fellow Laurentians won the first tournament and the Provincial Under-18's won the second one. He would have been just as proud of that as well because he too, played on a number of provincial All-Star teams.

Gerard was originally inducted prior to the Irish Newtown Rangers game on June 24th and his wife, Lisa, was on hand to receive his Hall of Fame plaque. At the 1999 Banquet he was formally inducted with the other inductees for 1999 and his Mom and Dad were there to receive a second plaque for their son's entry into the St. Lawrence Soccer Hall of Fame.
