Carl Ferrie

Carl was born in Bell Island on April 1,1948. Since there was no minor soccer in St. Lawrence where he grew up, he played in the meadows every opportunity he got. Upon reaching high school, he joined the House System. As one of the better athletes, he played with the High School All Stars competing against teams such as Holy Cross and Brother Rice.

From the High School league, he progressed to the Junior ranks in 1966 playing at left half and left wing during the old 5 — 3 — 2 system. In 1967, he joined the St. Lawrence Senior Laurentians who were successful in winning the Burin Peninsula, All Newfoundland, and Atlantic Provinces Championships. He was a member of the first Laurentian team to compete at the national level losing to Toronto Ballymenos by a score of 3-2.

Carl also played with the St. Lawrence Laurentians when they won the Burin Peninsula and All Newfoundland Championships in 1968, 1971, and 1972. In 1971 and 1972 the Senior Laurentians also won the Atlantic Provinces Championships in Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia with our inductee playing a very valuable and important role at left wing setting up Wils Molloy for many of his goals.

Although he played very hard and very determined, he received a number of Best Gentlemanly and Effective Player awards. This can be attributed more to his effectiveness, even though he always displayed a gentlemen’s behaviour regardless of the outcome of the game.

Due to further education and work commitments, our Inductee had to leave the game as an active player, however, he still maintains a keen interest in the game by supporting his fellow Laurentians in every way possible.
